Dragon Tattoos

For many centuries, dragon tattoos has been a symbol of power and mystery. Depicted in countless great legends, both Eastern and Western, the dragon has provoked man to fear and worship it. In the Medieval Europe, it was a bloodthirsty, fire-breathing figure of power. Its malevolence and ferociousness struck terror in everyone known. However, in Asia, it is the contrary. The mighty and awesome dragon tattoo is a mythical beast that has long been celebrated for its benevolence, intelligence and good will. The Chinese dragon has been a common symbol of identity for Far Eastern cultures.

In fact, Chinese people all over the world are affectionately known as “lung de chuan ren”, or the "descendants of the dragon”. There are many distinct species of Chinese dragon tattoos. The Horned dragon tattoo is considered to be the mightiest of all dragons. The Celestial Dragon supports the heavens and protects the Gods. The Earth Dragon rules all of the earth. The Spiritual Dragon controls the wind and the rain. The mighty Treasure Dragon is the keeper of precious metals and gems. The Winged dragon is the only dragon with wings, make sense? The Coiling Dragon dwells in the oceans of water. The Yellow Dragon is a hornless dragon known for its scholarly knowledge and great mind.

Dragon tattoos are usually shown in modern times with a body like a huge lizard, or a snake with two pairs of lizard-type legs, and able to emit fire from their mouths. The European dragon has bat-type wings growing from its back. A dragon-like creature with no front legs is known as a wyvern. Following discovery of how pterosaurs walked on the ground, some dragon tattoos have been portrayed without front legs and using the wings as front legs pterosaur-fashion when on the ground.

The whole of India is girt with dragon tattoos of enormous size; for not only the marshes are full of them, but the mountains as well, and there is not a single ridge without one. Now the marsh kind are sluggish in their habits and are thirty cubits long, and they have no crest standing up on their heads, but in this respect resemble the she-dragons. Dragons and actual dragon backs however are very black, with fewer scales on them than the other kinds; and Homer has described them with deeper insight than have most poets, for he says that the dragon that lived hard by the spring in Aulis had a tawny back; but other poets declare that the congener of this one in the grove of Nemea also had a crest, a feature which we could not verify in regard to the marsh dragon.
